Understanding the Need for Facet Joint Injections

Injections for Low Back Pain in Springfield
Before we can talk about facet joint injections, it is important to know about facet joint syndrome, also known as FJS. The condition is similar to arthritis in many ways, but affects the spine instead of the joints. It can be a major source of chronic back pain and is caused by “degenerative changes” in joints or whiplash injury between the spinal bones. The facet joints have cartilage, which can get inflamed and trigger pain signal to the surrounding muscles and nerve endings. In most cases, the condition is treated with medication and physical therapy, but if the patient doesn’t feel better, facet joint injections can be used in the problematic facet to reduce the pain and discomfort.

A facet joint injection is considered to be a minimally invasive procedure, which can be completed at the clinic of your physician or surgery center under x-ray guidance. The injection typically consists of an anesthetic agent along with a corticosteroid, which is injected in the painful joint. While the steroids reduce the swelling of the nerves, the anesthetic agent offers immediate relief from the pain. With an exercise program and physical therapy in place, the condition of the patient should improve with time.
